Prospero (The Tempest)
Prospero (The Tempest)
The Tempest follows the magician Prospero, the deposed Duke of Milan, who conjures a storm to draw his usurping brother and their court onto the island where he lives with his daughter Miranda. Through illusions, trials of character, and acts of mercy, Prospero orchestrates reconciliation, restores his dukedom, and frees the spirits who have served him.
The play is often read as Shakespeare’s farewell to the stage, with Prospero functioning as a self-portrait of the playwright: a master of illusions preparing to break his staff, drown his book, and release his characters as he steps away from the theatre.
