Portrait of Gadadhar Prasad

Portrait of Gadadhar Prasad

1881, India
Gum tempera and gold on cotton cloth

The portrait is of a man clad in a sumptuous gold and maroon robe sitting on an armchair in a carpeted interior hung with green glass lamps. European influence is also notable in the front-facing depiction of the subject, instead of the profile-facing depiction in traditional Rajasthani portraiture. The person appears to be from a wealthy background as he wears pearl and emerald necklaces with gold bracelets and toe ornaments.
