Ophelia (Hamlet)
Ophelia (Hamlet)
Polonius’s daughter, Ophelia, is a beautiful young woman with whom Hamlet has been in love. She is gentle, obedient, painfully innocent, with her fate shaped by the will of the men around her. Eventually, as her mind unravels under sorrow and pressure, she moves through her own fragile world with an almost otherworldly purity, singing drifting songs of flowers and heartbreak. Her life ends as delicately as she lived it, drowning in the river among the very flower garlands she had gathered, a passive surrender into tragic grace.
