High Brow is Nothing Without Low Brow

High Brow is Nothing Without Low Brow

Oil on canvas, 48 x 60 inches, 2025

This painting reasserts the body as myth while simultaneously mocking the gaze that seeks to consume it. What first appears as a surrealist gag (body humor) with fossil-like forms suspended over glossy, bikini-clad torsos; quickly reveals itself as both celebration and critique of the aesthetics of femininity in classical art and contemporary media.
At the compositional center is a totemic pelvic form reminiscent of Gupta-period sculpture, an artefact evoking classical representations of the divine feminine. Its belt bears three adornments that echo the three Baroque pearls suspended in the foreground, which in turn echo the torsos behind them. The totem has both the exalted aura of a divine goddess yet also a seductive erotic electricity—mimicking the duality in archetypal representations of femininity from ancient temple carvings to contemporary advertising.
Surrounding this are glistening, muscular faceless bodies cropped into seductive form. These are not passive nudes but confront the viewer with a gaze that dissects rather than returns desire.
Femininity here becomes an archaeological site: fragmented, fetishized, and revered. In this reversal, it is the viewer who is exposed. Color functions as both seduction and critique. Saturated yellows and violet evoke Pop Art and 1980s athletic wear. This places the work in a postmodern grotesque context, the excess being indicative of our hyper-consumerist times.
Tension underlies the composition: between desire and sanctity, body and relic, parody and reverence. What remains of beauty when it is canonized and consumed? Can myth protect what it also imprisons via projection and objectification? What happens to the body when it becomes relic? Does sanctification preserve the feminine, or fossilize it? Is the exalted feminine ever truly free from the gaze that documents her via art? What forms of power are lost when the body becomes artefact?
