Sketch: Antony and Cleopatra

Sketch: Antony and Cleopatra

A clown delivers a basket of figs hiding asps, which Cleopatra presses to her breast. Her theatrical suicide transforms her in death into Antony’s true wife, in contrast to her worldly image as a seductress. The basket carries symbolic motifs, including fish, echoing the Romans’ comparison of Antony to a great fish captivated and caught by Cleopatra.
